Fremont Earth Day Fair – 2011:

On Saturday April 23, 2011, Green Kids Now, Inc. participated in the Earth Day Fair at Washington Hospital in Fremont.
In the fair, Green Kids Now conducted a survey for the adults. The survey had 3 simple questions.
1.Do you compost?
If yes, do you compost in your backyard or use the City’s compost solution?
2. Do you use your own bags for shopping?
3. How often do you water your plants in a week? What time of the day do you water?

Here are the results from our survey
1. Do you compost?: (survey conducted by Pavan Raj Gowda)

A total of 126 people participated in this survey. We conducted this survey to see if people were aware of the resources available to them for composting. The results show that 39% of the people we surveyed used their city’s compost solution; 25% had their own backyard composting, and 36% of the people did not compost at all. There is still plenty of work to be done to raise awareness about the resources available for composting, and the importance of composting.

2. Do you use your own bags for shopping? (Survey conducted by Omkaar Buddhikot)

A total of 60 people were surveyed regarding whether they carried reusable bags for grocery shopping versus plastic carry bags provided by the stores. 82 % of the people surveyed said that they did not carry their own reusable bags and used the store bags. 18 % of the people said that they did carry their own bags.

3.How often do you water your plants in a week? What time of the day do you water? (Survey conducted by Omkaar Buddhikot)

We asked 71 persons how often they water their garden and at what time of the day. About 47 % of the people surveyed watered their garden every 2-3 days. Almost 13 % people watered their garden everyday. 56 % watered their garden in the morning and 33 % watered in the evening. As per gardening experts, morning is the best time for watering.

This year our focus was to raise awareness on environmental issues and explain some facts and solutions through science. We explained making organic food choices, the green house effect, the different types of alternate resources, and a more efficient way to get fresh water using a desalination experiment. Our exhibits captured our audience both kids and adults and helped them to learn more on the importance of these choices and why we should care for our environment.

The best part was seeing kids and adults asking intriguing questions and seeing their eagerness to learn more on these topics.

I look forward to participating again next year!
