Fremont, CA – On Friday, November 13th, 2015, during an award ceremony, CA Senator, Mr. Bob Wieckowski, and CA Assembly Member, Mr. Bill Quirk, in the presence of Fremont City Mayor, Mr. Bill Harrison, Fremont City Council members, Mr. Vinnie Bacon, and Mr. Rick Jones, presented a prestigious Green Star School Award to, Steven Millard Elementary School from the Fremont Unified School District.

Millard Elementary School was awarded the Green Star School Status, under the Zero Waste School category.

“I’d like to congratulate Millard Elementary School on their accomplishment and thank them for leading by example in being a Green Star School,” says Mr. Robert Hanna, great, great grandson of Mr. John Muir.

Millard Elementary School has been following the Zero Waste School Guidance from www.GreenStarSchool.Org for two school years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, and they were finally able to fulfill all the requirements set forth for the Green Star School Award under the Zero Waste School category!

There are 5 sub-programs to this main Green Star School Awards program, and each sub-program can earn the school one green star. So, it offers schools the opportunity to become a 5 green stars school. The core, which is the 6th sub-program leads students to the path of responsible innovation, and the schools who are adopting activities at this level can earn the Gold Star Award and become the “leader in environmental sustainability”.

All these programs are designed to show students the importance and relevance of the environmental sustainability activities to their long term career paths, and to be aware of the global impacts.

Congratulations, Millard Elementary School on this well-deserved recognition as a Green Star School!

Also as a gift to help Millard school continue with the Green Star School programs, Green Kids Now offered a $1000 award, Hydroponics lab kit, and a very generous gift from “Digital Frog International” organization for this package which includes a disc with all five programs of the Digital Frog software, printed workbook and instructions for installing on ten computers at the school…the total value of this package is $1271. This software and lesson plans will help the students to learn without dissecting and killing more frogs. About 250 species of frogs have gone extinct in the past 40 years, and it is time for us to re-think frog dissections at schools.
